Our presentation for this workshop focuses on Virtual Travel Abroad.
The purpose of this program is to improve the conversation
skills in overseas travel situation.
One period (50 min.) is divided into three parts.
A. Listening Comprehension Using Recorded Conversation
B. Demonstration by JTE and ALT
C. Role Plays with ALT
Topics: On the Airplane, At the Hotel, At the Restaurant,
Shopping, Directions, At the Hospital
Examples of Role-plays
1)Dialogue on the airplane. The student is asked to play the part
of a passenger seeking help from the
flight attendant, played by the ALT. The student is offered a
choice of scenarios in which they can role-play
different situations which they might be confronted with.
--You wish to buy some duty-free gifts. Ask the flight attendant
how you can do this.
--You are tired and you wish to sleep. Ask the flight attendant
to bring you a pillow, blanket, slippers, etc.
--You want to know when the plane is landing.
--You want to know when the meal is served and and to order a
drink.
2)Dialogue at the hotel. The student is asked to play the part
of a guest in a hotel, while the ALT plays the part
of the hotel receptionist. The student practices several scenes,
which they might be faced with in a hotel.
--You wish to check into the hotel.
--You wish to pay the bill.
--You wish to make a complaint about your room.
--You are locked out of your hotel room.
Extra Resources
A hotel registry: Every student is asked to sign on the paper.
Proper signature is needed.
Money: Photocopies of British Sterling and loose coins are used
to help the students get an idea of foreign
money.
3)Dialogue at the restaurant. The student plays the part of a
customer at Harry Ramsden's Fish and Chip
Restaurant, while the ALT plays the part of the waitress. Again
the student is encouraged to choose between
several different situations.
--You want to order a starter, main course, dessert and a drink.
--You want to find out what dishes are on the specials board.
--You are vegetarian and do not eat meat or fish. What can you
order as an alternative?
--You have a problem with the bill, as you have been overcharged.
Try and sort out the situation.
Extra Resources
Money. The same photocopies from the previous dialogues are used.
Menu. A copy of a genuine menu from the restraurant.
