Earthquakes (Jishin)

Strong quakes usually last 1-2 minutes.
Do not rush to go outside and stay calm.

Please keep the following in mind.

  1. Stay under something strong such as a desk to protect yourself from falling objects.
  2. Turn off all the heaters and cooking stoves. Turn off the main tap for the gas.
  3. If a fire breaks out, call a fire station and shout to warn the neighbors. Do not try to put the fire out yourself.
  4. Do not rush outside. You may get hurt by falling objects.
  5. When you escape to a safe place such as schools and parks, stay away from moats, cliffs, and riverbanks.
  6. Make sure that you are in a safe surrounding to avoid possible damage from aftershocks.
  7. Do not use cars to escape. If an earthquake hits when you are driving, pull over and stop on the side of the road. Do not lock the car and leave the key in the car.
  8. Emergency shelter will be elementary schools or junior high schools. Please always be aware of available emergency shelter locations.
  9. Check the correct information regarding the earthquake on radio and TV.
  10. Telephone lines will be very busy. Unless necessary, do not use telephones.
